Handley-Page Halifax BIII MZ509 SE-L, RCAF

R.A.F. Membury

26th August 1944

This aircraft was built by English Electric and at the time of the crash was being operated by 431 (Iroquois) Royal Canadian Air Force Sqd, based at Croft. Port tyre burst on takeoff from RAF Membury where the plane had landed following a mission over Brest. The undercarriage collapsed and aircraft swerved off the runway out of control and hit some straw bales. It continued across the airfield before hitting some parked gliders where it caught fire. No serious injuries to crew.
