Armstrong Whitworth A.W.38 Whitley Mk5 Z6643, 77 Sqd, RAF

Upper Upham, near Aldbourne

24th July 1941

Aircraft was returning from operations over La Pollice where it had been attempting to bomb the German battleship Sharnhorst. The Whitley had received moderate flak damage over the target and on the return journey the port engine cut-out. As a result the crew had to make an emergency landing at Upper Upham, near Aldbourne.
